Hygroscopic Silk or Satin Violin Bags and/or Violin Pads – A Short How To

If you live in a tropical climate, or a place where humidity can get high in season, here is a short guide on how you can consider purchasing a silk bag and/or a violin pad to protect your instrument.

Helps with Protecting Instrument, Lessening Need to Clean Silk or Satin Bags

One useful accessory to both keep or store your instrument, as well as to protect it from dust and grime is an ultra-soft violin bag made of a thin but durable and ultra-soft material like silk, or even satin.

Storing your violin in a silk and/or satin bag should further protect your instrument from the accumulation of dust, grime, or rosin residue that may accumulate from what is left on the instrument when it is packed in a violin case.

Silk, additionally, has the property of attracting water, which makes it very ideal to keep your instrument’s humidity at a good range, especially if you live in a humid environment, or especially during the summer months.

When purchasing a silk or satin violin bag, do be careful that the bag is made of a material that will not leave an imprint of its printed, colored surface, as well as leave marks that may abrade the surface of your instrument or its varnish.

Real silk is hygroscopic, which makes it easily absorb water, and will help to protect your instrument if the weather or environment is humid.

Viollin Pads or Violin Covers

In the absence of a silk or satin bag, violin pads to place as a cover over your instrument and as a cover over its surface should also work as a way to keep dust out. Violin pads are soft, cushioned, padded layers that cover the violin in a violin case during storage.

Violin pads also serve the function of mild shock absorption, especially handy if you carry your instrument around, and can be purchased separately if it does not already come with your instrument.

Not only, you can purchase violin pads or covers of different materials, each of which might have different properties ideal for your needs and purposes. [I will enclose links to some of these below as well]

Silk violin pads or covers also have the additional property of protecting your instrument from humidity, particularly in the summer months.
