Violin Bridges – Critical
The violin bridge is one of the most critical parts of the violin.
Transmitting vibrations from the violin strings directly through the sound-post, the bridge is what helps the violin body to vibrate, and is one of the parts of the violin entirely responsible for the production of sound.
As a consequence, the design or make, angle, craftsmanship, and even material and fit of the bridge on the curvature can make a critical difference in terms of sound, clarity, acoustic quality, and projection of an instrument.
Bridges – Overtones, Color, and Adaptation
Certain bridges can also make overtones come out more quickly. This will vary with the kind of wood that they are made from.
Bridges can be purchased as made or they can be hand-crafted by a professional luthier, violin maker, or violin repairer. They can also be adapted – so an existing bridge can be purchased, as made, and then whittled down or tailored and individualized for the violin’s specific features.
Sometimes, bridges can break into two as a result of use and wear, or something need to be whittled down if order for the fingers to work less strenuously on the fingerboard. Bridges can also collapse if not tuned properly, and under the weight of excessive string tension.
Bridges can be custom-made, adapted, or further adapted from existing function. Enquire with your luthier, violin repair person, or instrument maker today, and especially if you are in need of an urgent replacement for the bridge. In terms of time and exigency, you can always purchase a bridge ready made. If you prefer the makes of some existing ready made bridges, but would like them to be adapted for your instrument and the curve of your fingerboard or the fit of your fingers in particular, you can also do that.
